Govt increases the fees for MBBS Courses

Nod to uniform fee structure I Hefty increase in fee for NRI quota seats

The Himachal Government has finally decided to run Nahan Medical College on the pattern of Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), Shimla, and Dr RP Medical College, Tanda (Kangra). The government has notified the uniform fee structure for the MBBS course for all three colleges with a substantial hike in the fee of the IGMC and Tanda Medical College.

It also notified a hefty increase in the fee for seats under the NRI quota from $13,000(Rs 8.65 lakh) to $20,000 (Rs 13.32 lakh) per annum, implying that the total additional burden will be about Rs 23.50 lakh for the full course.

The fee for the MBBS course has been increased from Rs 45,000 to Rs 60,000 in the first year while the fee for second, third, fourth and fifth year will be Rs 50,000 instead of Rs 37,000 per annum.

Besides, Rs 25,000 (approximately) will be payable for availing hostel facility which included rent, electricity and water charges, utensils, mess servant charges, etc.

The tuition fee has been increased from Rs 30,000 to Rs 40,000, admission fee from Rs 3,000 to Rs 4, 000, student fee from Rs 3,000 to Rs 4,000, medical fund from Rs 2,000 to Rs 3,000, security (Refundable) from Rs 5,000 to Rs 6,000 and dilapidated fund from Rs 2000 to Rs 3,000.

The number of NRI seats has been fixed at 13 in the first batch of 100 MBBS students in Dr YS Parmar Medical College at Nahan, two seats are reserved in IGMC and four seats in the Tanda medical college for NRI students.

Earlier, the government was toying with the idea to run new medical colleges in the PPP mode or through society and a committee, headed by Chief Secretary VC Pharka, was set up to review the fee structure which recommended the uniform fee structure for all three colleges and the same pattern is likely to be followed for three new colleges at Hamirpur, Chamba and Nerchowk (Mandi).

The government has chosen to increase the NRI seats and also increase the fee for NRIs to mobilise funds and hiked the fee for IGMC and the Tanda medical college by about 30 per cent.

In Nahan college, 29 out of 100 MBBS seats have been reserved which includes 12 for Scheduled Caste, six for Scheduled Tribes, one each for children of ex-servicemen, defence personnel and freedom fighter, two for backward area, two for Other Backward Caste, two for physically handicapped, one for single girlchild and one for children of Tibetan refugee.

As many as 15 seats will be filled on the basis of all-India quota and 13 from NRI candidates and the total number of unreserved/general seats is 43.

The counselling for 100 MBBS seats in the IGMC, Tanda and Nahan colleges and 150 seats in Maharshi Markendeshwar Medical College, Kumarhatti, is in progress and all seats, including the seats under management quota, will be filled through NEET-2016.

The BDS seats in Government Dental College and seven private dental colleges will also be filled on the basis of NEET-2016 merit.
